Produce Packing

Flake ice and liquid ice are used in the removal of field heat of certain vegetables, case icing prior to shipping, and top icing of the shipping containers after being loaded into trucks or rail cars. Liquid ice is preferred for icing cases of vegetables. A predetermined amount of liquid ice is discharged automatically into the case on top of the vegetables. The ice filters down through the container and fills all voids starting from the bottom up. The water drains out through the holes in the bottom of the case to a reservoir under the conveyor. This chilled water is usually returned to the liquid ice tank for remixing. This system completely surrounds the vegetables with ice provide a greater cooling affect over a longer period of time.
