Industrial Flake Ice Machines

no ice maker delivers more

Since 1950, North Star Ice Equipment has led the world in the design and manufacture of high-capacity, industrial flake ice makers. North Star’s enclosed vertical drum design and expert construction result in a low stress, low wear, and low maintenance ice maker that is simple to install and operate.

Versatile

  • Choose stainless steel or carbon steel freezing surfaces depending on your application.
  • Available in five models with capacities between 4.6 and 53 tons (4.2 to 48 MT) of ice, depending on operating conditions. Combine two or more models for greater ice making capacity. Makes ice from fresh water, seawater and other liquids.
  • Uses ammonia or halocarbon refrigerants.
  • Installs on land or onboard vessels with a broad range of power options.
  • Offers the smallest footprint with the largest ice capacity in the business.
  • Ice thickness can be varied in the field by changing the speed of the rotor.

Dependable

  • Built for industrial use with high-quality, heavy-duty parts.
  • Constructed to ASME code for 250 PSIG working pressure.
  • Designed with a stationary double-walled evaporator and no refrigerant seals, which are known to leak.
  • Includes important safety features, such as a see-through inspection hatch with safety switch, mechanical load limit switch, emergency stop switch, and drive belt guard.
  • Covered by a lifetime evaporator warranty.

Economical

  • Makes more ice than any other ice maker using an equally rated compressor.
  • Operates continuously with no defrost cycles. All energy used goes to making ice.
  • Recirculates any water overflow back to the water tank so no water is lost. The patented drip shield ensures that no water falls into the ice storage bin.
  • Designed with an attached insulated accumulator to provide accurate refrigerant level control and complete separation of liquid and gas refrigerant. (Also available as a forced recirculation system with no accumulator).
  • Encased in high R-value polyurethane insulation with a molded fiberglass cover to increase energy efficiency and eliminate corrosion.

FEATURES, ADVANTAGES & BENEFITS OF FLAKE ICE

Flake ice differs from other types of ice in a number of important ways and all flake ice makers are not the same. North Star’s flake ice makers have unique features that make them an effective and economical choice for many cooling needs in food related applications and other types of processes.

Faster Cooling

Flake has more than 17,000 square feet (1,579 square meters) of surface area per ton of ice, providing greater cooling efficiency than any other ice.

Better Product Coverage

Flake ice is formed in flat flakes which flow more freely and provide greater contact area than any other type of ice. Ice thickness can be changed from 1.5 to 2.0mm with simple adjustments to the machine.

Thorough Product Mixing

Flake ice melts rapidly to dissipate heat and add moisture to mixtures, aiding the blending process, and will not damage blending equipment.

Greater Product Protection

Flake ice remains dry, packs well and cushions products against damage. The flat shape will not create indentations in perishable products.

Food Safety

Our stainless steel flake ice makers are designed to meet the strict food safety requirements for food processors, including those in seafood, processed meat, poultry, produce, and baking industries

Cost Effective Production

Flake ice is economical to produce, requiring only 1.3 tons of refrigeration per ton of ice from 60°F (+16.0°C) water.

Easier Storage and Distribution

Flake ice is completely dry which inhibits the ice from fusing together in a low temperature storage bin or clogging screw conveyors and pneumatic delivery systems. Flake ice will form a thin crust in a vessel hold or storage bin which preserves the ice for use at a later time. Breaking the thin crust will reveal, dry, sub-cooled ice flakes which are available for immediate use in product cooling or re-handling.
